So we're back in Germany at the moment and we're leaving for England tomorrow morning.
In May Alex will head to Bosnia one last time for Village of the Forgotten Widows to get some footage of the high school in Srebrenica as well as some other things.

Our Last Interview

Our last interview for "Village of the Forgotten Widows" today was with Bego's sister-in-law.
Her husband (Bego's brother) died two weeks after we interviewed them in November due to lack of medication and medical aid.

She explained to us how they struggled financially when her husband was still alive, and how things have now only gotten worse. She worries every day about whether or not she's going to be able to provide a meal for her son, 15, who's still in school.

Yet, nobody's offered to help her. She's a widow, a single mother, a victim of war, and in bad health, but still no aid has reached her.

Something is wrong with this picture, something needs to change.

Interview with Advija

Interviewed Advija yesterday. Both of her parents were killed during the war. She is now studying to be a nurse while also taking care of her mentally challenged brother.

She told us that her only two goals are to make her parents proud, and to eventually be able to get a loan for a house that she can move in to with her brother.

We’re here in Bosnia for the second time now to shoot our documentary, “Village of the Forgotten Widows”. Initially our goal was to put a spotlight on the stories and current situations of the women who’d lost their husbands during the war.

However, after many interviews it has come to our attention that the widows of the war aren’t the only people suffering here today. Men, women, teenagers and children are still being negatively affected by what happened more than fifteen years ago.

The ability to find steady work is a major problem for most. So many young people go to school and get degrees only to realize they’re unable to find employment.

Being a film production company, we’re able to give these people a voice on film, but they need much more than that. Aside from being here to shoot a documentary, we’re also in the process of starting a small company in Srebrenica that will provide jobs to those in need. All money raised will be put back in to developing future business in Bosnia.

Being here we’ve come to the conclusion that these aren’t just people with sad stories from their past. These are people who are the living products of a war that never truly ended. If nobody is to blame, then who is going to take responsibility?

Protest

Today we attended the protest that's held on the 11th of every month in Tuzla. We then met a woman who we will be interviewing later on this week.

We also stopped by Bego's house to pay our respects, and see how he's coping with the recent loss of his brother. He will be coming with us to Srebrenica one last time before we leave, to show us some things from his past.

Back in Srebrenica

Yesterday was spent in Srebrenica as we completed two more interviews for the documentary.

We met again with the head of the "Women of Srebrenica' association. She opened our eyes to the struggling business' in Srebrenica.

Afterwards we met with the sister of a former mayor of Srebrenica. She lost her only son in the war. However, like many others, despite everything she's been through, she was extremely kind and welcoming to us. If only more people were like her!

Tomorrow we head to Tuzla to shoot the protest that happens every month.

Women of Srebrenica

Today we met with two members of the "Women of Srebrenica" at their office in Tuzla. Both women were very helpful in answering our questions and letting us film their interviews.

On Saturday we will be meeting up with them again in Srebrenica!

Sad News

So we're back in Bosnia and back to shooting 'Village of the Forgotten Widows'.

We recently learned that Bego's brother, the man we met who'd been forced to move to 'the middle of nowhere', died only two weeks after we interviewed him with his wife and sixteen year old son.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bego's entire family. Hopefully once this documentary is complete, more people's eyes will be opened to the ongoing struggle the victims of the 1995 genocide still face every day here.

Everything is supposedly going great. Lovely weather, lovely talent, and a lovely crew !!

We've just been doing some office work, casting, writing etc. We are currently working on a script for a new feature for next year.
Nothing too exciting at the moment.

Ghost Hunters

The film industry is funny. One day we're in Bosnia, talking to victims of genocide, and the next day we're in Germany, filming a team of ghost hunters chase a departed soul.

So we've been having trouble at our house with what seems to be a ghost. Whenever the kids sleep in their room, they wake up screaming and crying, always around 1am. However, if they sleep in any other room, they sleep all through the night.
Also, whenever they aren't in their room, its toasty warm, but as soon and they're in there, playing or sleeping, its freezing cold.

Recently, a medium visited the house, and said that the spirit of an older man stays up in the kids room, and occasionally likes to wake them up.

So in came the ghost hunters, with all of their little ghost-ee gadgets. At one point the light on my camera started flickering, and when they asked it to knock on the wall for them, two eerie knocks were heard.

After all this, I guess it's human to remain skeptical. However,ever time the two year old stares past me and says "man, there!" and points, I get shivers down my spine.

What kind of tie does a ghost wear to a formal party? A boo-tie.

Back in Srebrenica

So yesterday we went back to Srebrenica, this time along with Bego (the man we interviewed who'd escaped through the woods to Tuzla).
We interviewed him again at the memorial site, and watched him point out his family members graves. He told us stories of when he was walking to Tuzla. Once, he and another man had come across a woman who was badly injured, they soon came across an ambulance. Bego offered to carry her down to the ambulance but the other man insisted on doing it himself.

The "ambulance" turned out to be a way for the Serbs to find those who'd escaped. Both the man and the injured woman were killed. Bego pointed out his name at the memorial site stating, "this is the man who saved my life".

Afterwards we travelled to his newly built home. After spending 15 years trying to get his family back on their feet, he got a phone call simply stating, "Your house is ready".

He has no idea who built his house, nor did he have any say in how it was built.

He'd told us that his new house was in the middle of nowhere, but we didn't realise just how "in the middle of nowhere" it really was.

After driving about 40 minutes up a mountain, we had to park our cars and walk another 15-20 minutes or so to his house.

It was hard to imagine anyone living up there. It would take a young person about 2 hours to walk down the mountain, and longer to find a shop. How they expected an elderly couple to just leave where they'd been living for 15 years and move there was beyond us.

We also met with his brother, who also lives on the mountain with his wife and 16 year old son. He and his wife explained how all they want is for their son to make something of his life. Isn't that what every parent wants for their child? Opportunity.

His brother also explained how he'd run out of the medicine he needs to take every night. Also how when they run out of money, he needs to fight for his pension.

I think the message here is clear, someone needs to fight for these people.

Interviews 3 & 4

So yesterday we met two different families.

The first family was Aisa's (the woman from the first interview) family. We were introduced to her three sons and grandson. We spoke about how the war has set limitations for second and third generations. About how difficult it is to get an education, and how even if one does manage to get through college, there is still a slim chance of getting a job.

The second family we met had a very interesting story. The wife, their 7 year old son, and 4 month old twin boys, were put on a bus headed to Tuzla, while the husband was left to be killed with the other men. He escaped by walking through the forest for eight days along with around 15,000 other men.

During the walk, he watched two of his brothers get killed.

He mentioned how at one point he saw a river and ran down to drink water, only to realise the water was red with blood.

The family will be joining us on wednesday when we return to Srebrenica, to show us their old home.

Not the most joyful of birthdays for Alex, who turned 33 yesterday, but still very very worthwhile.

Second Interview

Today we met with another victim of the genocide in Srebrenica. The interview itself lasted around 40 minutes or so, but stayed with us for the rest of the day.
He was 11 years old when he left Srebrenica.
Our director, Alexander Herget, asked how he'd avoided being taken with the other men and boys. He explained that Serbs had tied a rope between two tanks, and the boys who were too tall to pass underneath the rope were taken and killed. "I was lucky to be short" he told us.

Hearing stories like this are really tough. Especially when you look back and think of what you were doing in 1995. Where you fighting to survive? Probably not.
Where was the rest of the world when this was happening? Where is the world now? These victims need support, and hopefully this documentary will help them receive some.

First Interview

Today we went to the protest that happens here on the 11th of every month. Together, people carry the names of their missing loved ones strung together.

After the protest was over, we found Aisa Husic, a woman who lost her husband and her home in Srebrenica. Before the war, she lived in a three story house with her husband and children. Now she lives in a tiny apartment with seven other people.

Even after everything that has happened to her, she agreed to get in our car and let us take her

to her apartment to interview her.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by an elderly woman who also lives with Aisa and her grandson, and given coffee and biscuits. I'm still amazed by how kind and welcoming people are here.

Srebrenica

Today we drove down to Srebrenica to meet with a contact. Two hours, three chocolate bars, and one speeding ticket later, we arrived.

It's hard to describe Srebrenica. The air felt thick, and for the first time, we were able to see the devastation these people are surrounded by every day. There is nothing they can do for fun, no cinemas, no clubs, nothing. When your biggest tourist attraction is a mass grave, there's a problem.

As we were driving around, we came across a very nice looking building, the first and only nice looking building in Srebrenica. Can you guess what it was?

If you guessed government and UN headquarters, you guessed right.

Tommorow we're shooting a protest in Tuzla, so keep posted !!

We've been here for four days now, taking pictures, meeting with contacts, and getting to know our surroundings.

Things here seem to be frozen in time, a sad reminder of what happened here 15 years ago. Yet people are still very positive, kind and helpful. A good example of this is the group of young people who set up tables in the streets of Tuzla trying to raise 250,000 euros so that their old friend from high school could travel to Germany for a bone marrow transplant.

We also visited the graves of the 51 people killed at a cafe in Tuzla during the war. Most of them were students in their teens. The youngest person killed was a 3 year old boy.

We also met our translator, Damir. He had some very interesting stories about life in Bosnia. As well as some very good advice about where to eat, and where not to eat. Unfortunately, we found this out the hard way hehe.
